Schools’ hands up for project grants

The Department of Education is inviting schools to apply for funding to support small-scale projects through its Local Schools Community Fund.

The Department said eligible Government, Independent and Catholic schools could lodge one application for each of their campuses for funding of between $1,000 and $20,000 to cover a variety of projects at a local level.

“Projects could include small-scale extensions or classroom refurbishments, new computer facilities, mental health and counselling services, playground equipment, library resources, or sports facilities,” the Department said.

Other possibilities included procurement of musical facilities, furniture, air-conditioning, excursions for students from remote areas, additional English as a second language support for refugee students and specific facilities for students with a disability.

“Funding requested can be for the total cost of the project, or part of the cost where the school contributes an amount,” it said.

The Department warned that if the school’s local Member of Parliament was not participating in the fund, the school would not receive funding.

“Funding for schools in your electorate will be allocated to other electorates,” it said.

The Department said approved projects could begin once notification had been received and must be completed by 31 December 2020.

Applications close on 30 September.
