Transport Canberra has announced a range of safety upgrades at schools across the Territory in time for the start of the new school year.

The works include new footpath connections, refuge islands, speed humps and pedestrian crossings – some with school crossing supervisors.

“Parents should familiarise their child with their school route so they can confidently and safely walk, ride or catch the bus or light rail each day,” Transport Canberra said.

It also issued a reminder for parents to top up their MyWay transport cards with sufficient funds for when school starts on 3 February.

“A MyWay card is easy to get and will save you money,” it said.

“Children will also need to carry their student ID on buses and light rail.”

Transport Canberra also reminded motorists that school zones would be back in operation from 8am to 4pm on weekdays, requiring them to slow down to 40km/h during the ACT school term.

“Also ensure you park safely and legally around our schools – this supports the safety of our kids and other road users,” it said.
