School speed zones back from holidays

Police have warned drivers that school zone speed limits are fully back in effect this week despite many school children learning from home.

Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Detective Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman said drivers who chose to ignore school zone speed limits would face tough penalties.

“The Canberra community should realise that all school zones are in operation and COVID-19 has not changed our focus on everyone’s safety on our roads,” Detective Station Sergeant Boorman said.

“Even though most children are conducting lessons from home, there are still some students – as well as teachers and other staff – attending schools,” he said.

“So school zone speed limits are still in operation to help protect all road users.”

Detective Station Sergeant Boorman said the 40km/h speed limit was necessary in school zones because it gave motorists extra time to stop in unexpected situations

“Over the past few months, we’ve seen health directions and advice change quickly,” he said.

“The best thing we can do is tell you a sure thing that won’t change all term – that a 40km/h limit will apply in all schools zones between 8am and 4pm.”

He said police would have a presence at the schools and continue to proactively target all schools to ensure drivers were getting the message.

Detective Station Sergeant Boorman said Access Canberra would also be working to support community safety around school zones, with mobile speed vans in operation.
