School drivers to face traffic tests

The Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate has warned of traffic increases around schools as it discourages the use of public transport unless essential and encourages parents to practice physical distancing.

The Directorate said each school and surrounding environment was different, so schools would need to develop their own strategies to support physical distancing requirements during the morning and afternoon peak periods.

The Directorate said schools should consider encouraging students to walk or ride to school; remind parents to be patient and to park legally and safely; develop a system in which school staff supervise the pick-up and set down of children; and encourage the use of part way points around the school.

“Part way points are a simple way to reduce congestion and increase safety around schools,” the Directorate said.

“They help to make the school drop off and collection run easier and faster for all parents by reducing congestion at the school gate,” it said.

“Part way points are effective because they can be tailored to suit your needs, which may change from day-to-day.”

The Directorate said schools should also consider reminding parents to avoid congregating in groups and to wait in vehicles while their children come to meet them, instead of parking and walking out to meet them.
