Safety spotlight shone on caravans

Transport for NSW has conducted a series of free educational safety checking days to give caravan and camper trailer owners the knowledge and confidence to hit the road safely.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Paul Toole said the events were held earlier this month at Kempsey, Coffs Harbour and Grafton in response to a rise in regional travel.

“Transport for NSW rolled out these free workshops in a State-wide first and I’m glad so many people attended to ensure their own safety and the safety of other road users,” Mr Toole said.

“With international travel restrictions still in place, and domestic restrictions only just lifting, we’ve seen a surge in the number of people wanting to explore all the wonderful things regional NSW has to offer in a caravan or camper trailer,” he said.

“But it’s important that these homes away from home are compliant and can be used right across our State road network safely.”

Mr Toole said the events were designed to make holidays as pleasant as possible, while also ensuring caravan owners were compliant with essential safety requirements.

The Minister said caravan safety guidelines, a new caravan safety brochure and pre-departure checklist were now available to help drivers stay safe this holiday season.

The caravan safety guidelines can be accessed at this PS News link, the five-page caravan safety brochure at this link, and the two-page pre-departure checklist at this link.
