Safe Work takes stand against sitters

Safe Work Australia is supporting a program tackling one of the most significant factors impacting work health and safety when working from home — prolonged sitting.

The Agency is backing BeUpstanding, a free evidence-based program designed to address the work health and safety risks that come from poring over a computer for hours on end.

In a statement, Safe Work Australia said employers and organisations could sign up to the BeUpstanding trial to gain access to resources and guidance on how to encourage workers to stand up, sit less and move more.

“This year has seen an increase in desk-based workplaces transitioning to, or increasing existing working from home arrangements to minimise the risk of exposure to COVID-19 in the workplace,” Safe Work Australia said.

“Workplaces across the country have had to adapt their policies and procedures and consult with workers to ensure work health and safety requirements are met even if workers are at home.”

It said the BeUpstanding toolkit included fact sheets, videos and email templates, all tailored to desk-based workers working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The BeUpstanding website can be accessed at this PS News link and information and resources on the risks associated with working from home are available on the Safe Work Australia website at this link.
