The recent Dental Health Week coincided with SA Dental’s 40th year of service to South Australians.

In a statement, SA Dental said it provided dental services to eligible children and adults at more than 40 clinics across the State and, in partnership with the University of Adelaide, provided up to 90 clinical placements for students through the Adelaide Dental Hospital.

During Dental Health Week SA Dental professionals talked to clients about the importance of maintaining good oral health to keep teeth and gums healthy.

Executive Director of SA Dental, Mark Chilvers said the State was lucky to have such an incredible organisation which had been delivering quality care to eligible South Australian adults and children for four decades.

“I’d like to also acknowledge the outstanding achievement of the University of Adelaide Dental School which has finished in the top spot in Australia and 25th in the world on the QS World University Rankings,” Mr Chilvers said.

“South Australians should expect to keep their teeth for their lifetime and by maintaining good oral health habits, you can achieve this goal.”

He encouraged all South Australians to maintain good oral hygiene practices by brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, visiting their dentist for regular check-ups, and by limiting their added sugar intake where possible.

He was supported by South Australia’s spokesperson for the Australian Dental Association, Angelo Papageorgiou who said good oral health began at an early age and should be maintained throughout adult life.

“Children should visit the dentist from the time of the eruption of their first tooth and on at least an annual basis to establish good oral health care and habits,” Dr Papageorgiou said.

“Adults too should be prioritising regular check-ups with their local dentist to ensure that minor and often undetected oral health issues do not turn into much worse conditions.”
