Road users are being reminded to play it safe around Sydney’s light rail, with new vision from Transport for NSW showing risky behaviour from drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
Minister for Transport, Andrew Constance said the drivers of light rail carriages were seeing near misses far too regularly.
“Almost every day we are seeing some really risky behaviour around our light rail vehicles,” Mr Constance said.
“I really urge everyone to be extra careful, particularly as restrictions ease and more people are out and about,” he said.
“We can’t have people darting out in front of vehicles, or drivers parking across the tracks.”
“Remember the tram tracks are for trams, not for bicycles and not for cars.”
Mr Constance said drivers must always follow traffic signals and never turn in front of the trams.
“If you are a driver and find yourself in the tramway – do not panic and drive slowly until you reach the next point where you can exit the tramway safely,” he said.
Chief Operations Officer at Transport for NSW, Howard Collins said cyclists needed to be particularly careful around tram tracks.
“Cyclists are reminded to never ride along the tracks and cross straight over the tracks. Tracks can be slippery so be extra careful in wet weather,” he said.
“For pedestrians; look out before you step out and use designated crossings, particularly in the pedestrian area,” Mr Collins said.
