The Department of Transport and Main Roads has announced that work has begun on improvements to pedestrian and bike rider safety on Elizabeth Street, Urangan.
Director-General at the Department, Neil Scales said a pedestrian refuge would be built on Elizabeth Street, near the Garden Street intersection, as part of the $181,500 project.
“The refuge will provide a safe place for pedestrians to stop and negotiate one direction of traffic at a time,” Mr Scales said.
“A gap will also be created between the kerb and traffic lane for bike riders to safely pass pedestrians and motorists.”
He said the project was a good outcome for the local community who had asked for improved pedestrian facilities in the area.
“Works will generally be carried out between 6am and 6pm, Monday to Friday. Every effort will be made to minimise impacts to motorists,” Mr Scales said.
“To carry out the works safely and efficiently, traffic controllers, single-lane closures and reduced speed limits will be in place as required.”
He said RoadTek was delivering the project, which is expected to be completed within a month, weather permitting.
“The works are funded under the Vulnerable Road Users program, which allocates funding to improve the State-controlled road network for bike riders, pedestrians and motor-cyclists,” Mr Scales said.
