Road lives lost prompt lifesaving campaign

The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) has launched a new safety campaign pleading with Victorian road users to heed warnings as the number of lives lost on the State’s roads surpasses 100.

Chief Executive of TAC, Joe Calafiore said the Commission had launched its Pause Stop campaign in response to the unacceptable level of road trauma and to support Victoria Police’s enforcement efforts.

“Road safety authorities are particularly concerned with the rise in regional fatalities, the increase in pedestrian and motorcycle rider deaths, and the number of young people dying – with deaths in road users aged 18-25 almost double this time last year,” Mr Calafiore said.

“The campaign will deter road users from engaging in unsafe behaviours – reminding people that if they take risks on the road, they will get caught,” he said.

“While campaigns and education are vital when it comes to reducing road trauma, the community needs to work together to draw a line in the sand.”

Mr Calafiore urged Victorians to drive safely for everyone by slowing down, buckling up, putting phones away and separating drinking from driving.

“We can all help make our roads safe,” he said.

As the State moves into the winter months, the Chief Executive urged road users to prepare for all sorts of weather.

He said slowing down, staying alert and driving to the conditions became even more important when weather and road conditions were poor.

Mr Calafiore encouraged motorists to plan ahead before any long drive and make safe choices when behind the wheel.
