Rights Commission calls for help

The Victorian Equal Opportunities and Human Rights Commission has called on community organisations, public sector Agencies and other supporters to help it combat racism.

The call follows the Commission reporting on increases in racist abuse and attacks directly related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Racism remains one of the most persistent issues we hear about at the Commission and, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve seen a worrying rise in racist abuse and attacks, particularly targeting people from Asian backgrounds,” the Commission said.

“To combat this issue, support victims and raise awareness of the impact of racism on the community, we’re asking community organisations, public sector agencies and other supporters for their help,” it said.

It said Agencies and organisations could help by sharing links to its enquiries and complaints services via their social media accounts; including a short article about its services on Agencies’ websites; and by hosting the Commission’s Community Reporting Tool on their websites.

“On our resource hub, we’ve prepared a stakeholder kit and collected some resources – including sample social media, and website and newsletter content – that you can use to help members of your community understand their rights and how they can make a complaint about racism or other discrimination,” the Commission said.

Further information on the Commission, including resources on how to help it, can be accessed at this PS News link.
