Researchers collect fish frames for science

Recreational salmon fishers are being called on to help researchers from the Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) by donating fish frames to science.

Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development, David Basham encouraged recreational fishers to become citizen scientists and support the Australian Salmon Research project.

“Fishers can drop off their frames – filleted skeletons with head, tail and guts still intact – to 18 participating tackle shops, caravan parks around South Australia,” Mr Basham said.

“This is a really simple way that fishers can help researchers and in turn aid planning for sustainable management of this species into the future,” he said.

Mr Basham said the research project was in its second year, with about 350 salmon frames donated last year,

“So far this year, fishers have donated about 220 frames and the project is aiming to collect more than 350 frames this year,” he said.

Mr Basham said that to donate frames, fishers should catch and fillet an Australian Salmon from SA waters before 31 October 2021; Save and freeze the filleted frames, with the head, gut cavity and skeleton intact; Collect a donation form from a local participating tackle shop; Use a lead pencil to fill out the donation form, including contact details and information on when and where the Australian Salmon was caught; and Drop off the fish frames and completed donation form in a sealed bag at a participating tackle store.

He said participants would enter a draw to win some great fishing prizes courtesy of Wilson Fishing, Shimano, SA Bait and Tackle Supplies and How’s Ya Tackle.
