Four of Victoria’s most important regulators in the construction sector have joined together to slash bureaucratic red tape for their clients.

Energy Safe Victoria, the Environment Protection Authority, the Victorian Building Authority and WorkSafe Victoria have signed the Small Business Regulatory Engagement Charter, which is expected to save small businesses in the construction sector tens of millions of dollars.

Minister for Small Business, Jaala Pulford said the Charter would cut red tape and provide clarity for businesses on what they could expect from regulators, and what they needed to do to meet their regulatory obligations.

“As part of its obligation under the Charter, the Government has committed to identifying the best ways of making sure that small businesses in the construction sector get the information they need on issues such as applications, registration, certification and fees,” Ms Pulford said.

“Through application of the Charter, the regulators will develop user-friendly websites, guidelines and other tools to make it easier for businesses to understand and comply with regulations,” she said.

Ms Pulford said the Charter was part of a package of reforms from the Government’s Small Business Regulation Review of the construction sector.

“This charter will mean owners can spend less time and money on compliance, freeing resources up to support business survival,” she said.

She said small construction businesses could collectively save as much as $40 million a year.
