A new community transport pilot program has been launched in Mount Alexander, aimed at improving transport accessibility for local residents.
The Minister for Public Transport, Melissa Horne joined the Member for Bendigo West, Maree Edwards in Castlemaine to announce $123,000 of funding for the new community transport pilot program.
Ms Horne said the program would provide a new accessible 11-seat bus and the ability to train volunteers to help locals’ access vital services that they might not be able to access currently.
“The program will see Maldon Neighbourhood Centre, Castlemaine Community House, Castlemaine Health and Castlemaine Fitness Centre partner with Mount Alexander Shire,” Ms Horne said.
“Mount Alexander Shire has provided $32,000 towards the project, [which will] deliver a tailored and integrated transport service to facilities and vital services,” she said.
Ms Horne said the funding was part of the Flexible Local Transport Solutions Program, which provided funding for local transport initiatives, services and infrastructure in regional Victoria.
“This program and the new accessible bus will make life easier for Mount Alexander locals by reducing isolation and improving participation in regional community facilities,” she said.
Ms Edwards said Accessible transport was vital to people living in regional areas.
