City Services is celebrating National Recycling Week with the launch of a new ‘Impact Calculator’ to help ACT residents see for themselves the impact the Territory’s container deposit scheme is making on the quality of life in the city.
Launching the ACT Container Deposit Scheme Impact Calculator for National Recycling Week (7-13 November), City Services said users could input the number of containers they had returned for recycling via the Scheme into the Calculator to see how their actions had impacted upon the ACT environment.
“The Impact Calculator then calculates the water, energy, and landfill savings as well as the carbon emissions avoided from recycling through the scheme,” the Directorate said.
“The tool translates these into everyday examples like water savings in minutes showering and energy saved to power your TV to help people relate to and understand the importance of recycling,” it said.
“An innovative toggle bar lets users see the positive impact if everyone in the ACT returned the same number of containers, highlighting the collective impact of people’s participation in the scheme.”
City Services said that by educating the ACT community about the benefits recycling was having on the local environment, it hoped more people would be motivated to recycle more and waste less
“The ACT Container Deposit Scheme targets commonly littered items, and includes plastic, glass, aluminium, steel, and liquid paperboard drink containers,” the Directorate said.
“Eligible containers featuring the 10c refund mark can be redeemed for ten cents each via the ACT collection point stream made up of depots, pods, express sites and a reverse-vending machine.”
