The Tasmanian Government has announced strong tourism returns for the state’s economy, with major events such as Dark Mofo drawing tens of thousands of visitors, boosting local businesses.

Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events Roger Jaensch said attractions such as Dark Mofo showcased Tasmania as a leading destination, even during its cold winters.

“Dark Mofo has once again delivered an extraordinary result for Tasmania’s visitor economy, with world-class music, art, performances, food experiences and public installations bringing Hobart to life throughout winter,” Mr Jaensch said.

“Across the festival, there were more than 100,000 tickets issued.”

Mr Jaensch said 60 per cent of online ticket sales were to international and interstate visitors, demonstrating the event’s strength in drawing people.

Dark Mofo reached a box-office record this year, earning $5.18 million, surpassing the previous record set in 2023. Hobart Airport, DarkLab and airline partners helped deliver a record 108,312 airline seats across the two weekends.

However, Dark Mofo is just one highlight of a winter calendar the government said was working well in bringing visitors to the state.

“Festivals such as the Island Escape Winter Festival and the Festival of Voices are attracting visitors to our regions, extending stays and creating reasons to travel during the cooler months,” Mr Jaensch said.

“Today also marks the beginning of Bicheno Beams, a family-friendly celebration of light, which adds another reason for visitors to experience Tasmania during winter.

“As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we are investing in events that drive visitation, help keep our economy strong and support the one in six Tasmanians employed in the tourism and hospitality industry.”
