Recognition for security officers

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) has marked International Security Officers Day, recognising security officers who put themselves in harm’s way to protect the public from danger.

The QPS’s Protective Services Group recently transitioned into the Security and Counter Terrorism Command where it continues to provide Queensland with static, patrol, alarm monitoring and consultancy services.

Senior Protective Officer Rhys McLeister recalled a time he helped a fellow community member out by calling for help.

“While on duty, I approached a man near a homeless facility I was patrolling in Brisbane,” Senior Protective Officer McLeister said.

“He was clearly intoxicated and disturbing the peace.

“He began to tell me about the suicidal thoughts he was having and opened up to me about his current circumstances.”

Senior Protective Officer McLeister called an ambulance and waited with him until it arrived, attempting to diffuse the situation.

“I reassured him that people cared for him and distracted him by discussing all of the positives in life. It was a truly moving experience to be able to help another person in such a meaningful way,” Senior Protective Officer McLeister said.

Communications Supervisor Daniel Price also referred to his rewarding experience working as part of a team to organise the response required by Protective Services for a sitting of Parliament in Townsville.

“This trip took place in the earlier stages of planning, where we were discussing the scope of what would be required on behalf of Protective Services — officers, equipment, facilities, work rosters and more,” Communications Supervisor Price said.

“After a long day of meetings, it was great to enjoy the surroundings, get to know the team better and network with colleagues in other Government Agencies.”

Organisers of International Security Officers Day which was celebrated last Friday said that day – 24 July – was chosen specifically to represent the 24/7 nature of security work.
