The Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) has announced it is holding an online vehicle number plate auction, the first of its kind in the past six years.
According to the Department, the exclusive plates – featuring highly sought-after four, five and six-digit numbers – were initially assigned to South Australian vehicles between 1906 and 1966 and were gradually phased out and replaced with the general-issue plates in use today.
It said the 80 plates would be available for bidding until 7pm, Tuesday, 11 April.
“All the numeric number plates will be auctioned with ‘class-specific’ rights, allowing them to be displayed on a registered vehicle, transferred to another vehicle under the same owner’s name, or have the rights transferred to another individual through a private sale or gift,” the Department said.
“Revenue raised from the auction will be returned to the Department for Infrastructure and Transport to fund services for South Australians,” it said.
The Department has appointed independent auctioneer Stewart Kay from Historic Plates to oversee the online auction.
It said interested bidders must be permanent South Australian residents to participate with bids placed via a downloadable app using either a PC, tablet or smartphone.
