Young public school students may soon be joining the ranks of public sector Agencies to gain experience in the workplace and develop skills and capabilities for use in a later career.

Under a new program developed by the Department of Education, the students will be placed inside the Agencies to gain real world experience in jobs relevant to their training.

Minister for Education and Training, Sue Ellery said a Work Placement Register had been developed to help students undertaking Vocational Education and Training to secure work placements in Government Agencies.

“(Students) will take part in an application process for a placement,” Ms Ellery said.

“There are about 50 placements available in a range of Agencies in roles such as facilities management, event management, grounds and maintenance, business administration, information technology and outdoor recreation,” she said.

She said the students would be placed at the Departments of Education; Communities; Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries; and Training and Workforce Development.

“Work placement has always been a wonderful way for students to gain hands-on experience,” Ms Ellery said.

“I’m thrilled with this initiative, which will give them even greater opportunities for invaluable on-the-job training.”

She said the students were the future of the State’s workforce and she wanted to give them the best chance to use the skills they had learnt in their vocational education and training studies in the real world.

“This initiative enables students to explore a range of exciting pathways in the public sector and ultimately help shape their career choices,” the Minister said.

She said the successful students would start their placements from this month.
