The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) is inviting community groups and organisations across the country to plant trees to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II (6 February).
Revealing the idea, the Department said the Platinum Jubilee celebrated Her Majesty’s 70 years of service to Australia and the Commonwealth.
“Australia will hold a range of national and community events in 2022 to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II,” DAWE said.
“These events will serve to honour the legacy of the Queen and her 70 years of service to Australia and the Commonwealth,” it said.
“Planting regionally‑appropriate species that enhance the tree canopy will also leave a legacy of its own – in the form of trees flourishing across the nation for Australians to enjoy into the future.”
DAWE said its Planting Trees for The Queen’s Jubilee Program would provide up to $15.1 million of grant funding in 2022 to eligible groups and organisations for community-based tree planting events.
Minister for the Environment, Sussan Ley said that, on Sunday, the Queen became the first British Monarch to reach the milestone of a Platinum Jubilee.
“The Queen is said to have planted 1500 trees throughout Her reign,” Ms Ley said.
She said the DAWE Program would give people the option of planting large shade trees in schools or civic centres; the chance to enhance a local park area; or to commence a local greening project.
