This year’s 16 Days in WA to Stop Violence Against Women, campaign, announced by the Public Sector Commission (PSC), has the theme ‘respect starts with you’.

In a statement, the PSC said the campaign was also a call to action for public sector employees and the Public Service which, as the State’s largest employer, was well positioned to drive a cultural change in the mindsets and behaviour that led to violence.

“Public sector employees can play a key role in shifting attitudes in the community about gender-based violence by educating, motivating and advocating for those affected by family and domestic violence,” the PSC said.

“The Public Sector Commission has recently released a guide to support Agencies create safe and supportive work environments for staff in the sector experiencing family and domestic violence.”

It said family and domestic violence affected many people and often the workplace was the only safe space where individuals could access support and have freedom and autonomy.

“As a sector, we are proud to promote diversity in our workforce and a culture of respect in our workplaces,” the Commission said.

“We can all do our part to ensure everyone who works in the public sector can maintain their employment and participate safely in the workplace — together we can make a difference.”

The campaign will run until 10 December.
