The ACT Public Service is set to increase by over 150 new personnel as positions are created help people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chief Minister, Andrew Barr announced a $20 million Jobs for Canberrans fund to provide secure, short-term employment opportunities within the ACT PS from now until June 2021.

Mr Barr said some of the areas that could expect to see increased staff levels were Access Canberra; city cleaning; garden and tree maintenance; environmental recovery following the bushfires; and administrative support.

“This is just the start of the job opportunities,” Mr Barr said.

“As the pandemic evolves, the Government will continue to explore further job opportunities across our Public Service to support Canberra families,” he said.

“The ACT Government will work with businesses, employee representatives and community services organisations to target to those people who are most in need.”

Mr Barr said that as part of the fund, Directorates would partner with the Canberra Institute of Technology to upskill workers engaged using internal programs.

“This will include a mix of both accredited and non-accredited training,” he said.

He said Transport Canberra Buses had already welcomed 30 people stood down from their usual roles within the wider transport industry to fill newly opened positions.
