PROV launches new online catalogue

Public Record Office Victoria (PROV), has launched a new search and online ordering system, marking the completion of its Digital Archive Program which commenced in 2015.

Announcing the program’s completion, PROV said it was a key initiative of its Victorian Electronic Records Strategy (VERS) aimed at ensuring access to complete, authentic and meaningful digital records of the State Government now and into the future.

PROV said the new search and order system was the final part of the Program and will allow users to find and access records of interest from the PROV catalogue more easily.

It said that its users – public and Government – could now view thumbnails as they searched; make digital records easier to find and download; select records as they searched; order copies of physical records directly from the item page without filling in a separate form; and access a personal dashboard which would display past and future orders, pick up and viewing times and links to copies.

The Office said additional benefits for Government recordkeepers included faster ingest times for digital record transfers and easier direct ordering of multiple records at once.

As the gods would have it, PROV also advised that its Victorian Archives Centre Reading Room was currently closed due to COVID-19 restrictions.

It said it would closely monitor Government directions and update its website but at this time did not have plans to reopen.

The five-page VERS can be accessed at this PS News link.
