Probe into PS exam outcomes

While much of India was still celebrating the success of candidates in the Indian Central Government Public Service examinations, attention has switched to irregularities in two States.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unknown “private persons” and officials of the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) in connection with a probe into State examination recruitments it conducted.

An FIR is the first stage of a police investigation and is initiated either by the police themselves or after a complaint by a member of the public that is deemed to have substance.

The FIR was registered after CBI officials detected anomalies in the selections made in the 2015 State Public Service examinations conducted by the UPPSC.

It claims that during the course of the inquiry, the officers of the UPPSC did not cooperate and did not part with information under one pretext or the other.

However, the inquiry conducted so far reveals officials of the UPPSC connived with other people and/or candidates for their selection in the examination.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) has come under fire for not holding examinations for the State’s Public Service for eight years.

The MPSC claimed the delay was initially because a number of workers appointed on a “contractual and ad-hoc basis” had claimed they were in fact full-time PS staff.

The MPSC had referred the matter to the State Government for advice.

There had also been changes in maximum age requirements for entry into the Public Service that were confusing.

“MPSC desires to hold the preliminary examinations in July 2018, but it will depend on the State Government’s decision,” the MPSC said.
