The Environmental, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate (EPSDD) is working to enhance and improve Box-Gum woodland conditions with prescribed burns now underway.
Announcing the burns, the Directorate said a prescribed burn at Blue Gum Point would take place today (20 April) to improve the Box-Gum native woodlands and help the Button Wrinklewort and Golden Sun Moth populations.
It said a second burn, scheduled for tomorrow (21 April), burn in Molonglo Valley near the National Arboretum aimed to enhance the Box-Gum woodland conditions, reduce the risk of fire and protect the surrounding areas.
“Experienced ACT Parks and Conservation fire managers will conduct and oversee the burning operation,” EPSDD said.
“Every effort is made to conduct burns in weather conditions that will minimise the impact of smoke, but temporary smoke cover is possible and may be visible across parts of Canberra,” it said.
“A buffer zone will be created around the perimeter of each prescribed burn to manage each burn to its conclusion.”
EPSDD warned that some minor smoke and glowing embers may be seen at the sites, which was normal for these types of operations.
It asked the public not to call emergency triple-zero unless they saw any unattended fire.
“Prescribed burns are an important part of the ACT’s annual Bushfire Operations Plan to reduce the risk of bushfires and help keep Canberrans safe,” the Directorate said.
