Western Australia’s Premier Roger Cook is travelling to Indonesia and Singapore for his first overseas journey since his re-election victory.
The Premier’s schedule includes meetings with senior government and important industry stakeholders in Singapore and Surabaya, the capital of East Java in Indonesia.
Seeking to strengthen both strategic and economic ties as well as reaffirm the state’s role in the energy transition and decarbonisation of ASEAN nations, the visit is vital to Western Australian interests.
Almost a third of Australia’s trade with Indonesia is with Western Australia, and Indonesia is Western Australia’s ninth-largest trading partner, representing a total trade value of $6.8 billion.
The key markets for this trading relationship are iron ore, other minerals, petroleum and wheat.
Premier Cook will also participate in strategic engagements with the Indonesia Australia Business Council East Java Chapter, the Australian Consul-General and the East Java Provincial Government in an effort to pursue Western Australian interests.
A key component of the engagement with Indonesia is with the Persebaya Surabaya Football Club (Persebaya FC), which is visiting Perth in July for an exhibition match against the WA men’s state team.
About 100 supporters will travel with the Indonesian club for the match on 9 July at the Sam Kerr Football Centre. The game is set to be televised in Indonesia.
After a two-day visit to Surabaya, the Premier will move on to Singapore. Singapore represents Western Australia’s fourth-largest trading partner, representing a total trade value of $14 billion. More than 40 per cent of Australia’s total trade with Singapore comes from WA.
Key export markets include petroleum, minerals, gas, meat and gold.
In Singapore, the Premier will participate in talks with leaders in business, investment and government to cover energy transition, decarbonisation and other, related areas.
“Indonesia and Singapore are crucial trading partners for WA – that’s why I’m prioritising this important region for my first overseas mission since the state election,” Mr Cook said.
