We were in a quandary: visit Hong Kong, Singapore or Thailand? Indecision about holiday destinations can be aggravating, so how can we resolve the issue? I turned my focus on personal priorities and constraints by clarifying the reason why we travel, creating a must-have list and defining our deal-breakers. We used this approach to systematically narrow down choices based on what truly mattered for our trip.
Admittedly, each visit was made separately. Singapore is an excellent choice for a seamless, efficient and modern experience, especially for a shorter visit. Hong Kong is a great option for a bustling, dynamic and diverse city adventure. Be prepared, though, for higher costs. However, Thailand is an ideal choice for a more relaxed pace and budget-friendly travel with a varied landscape.
A perfect trip depends not only on priorities, but distinct experiences that are on offer. Urban efficiency sits well with Singapore, a modern, clean and well-run hub with futuristic attractions. Highlights include iconic landmarks like Gardens by the Bay and the amazing Marina Bay Sands, which is the focal point from every angle. Both offer stunning architecture and panoramic views. Other top attractions include the world-class Singapore Zoo and Universal Studios Singapore on Sentosa Island, plus the unique Night Safari.
Hong Kong is certainly a dynamic city with a bustling, larger metropolis featuring a vibrant, though potentially more expensive, metropolitan life. Among the places of interest are Victoria Peak and the Avenue of Stars, cultural sites such as the Big Buddha on Lantau Island and Wong Tai Sin Temple, and entertainment options like Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park.
Thailand is ideal for affordability and its diverse nature as it provides a more assorted and budget-friendly option and a landscape with a mix of mountains, rivers and forests, from beaches to cultural sites. In particular, Kanchanaburi Province — in central Thailand, about 130 kilometres west of Bangkok — is worth visiting for its unique blend of historical significance and natural beauty. It offers a mix of powerful World War II history, particularly the Death Railway, alongside stunning natural attractions such as Erawan Falls and national parks.

History: This plaque honouring Australia’s Sir Edward ‘’Weary’’ Dunlop is on the Hellfire Pass memorial walking trail.
Along the Hellfire Pass walking trail is the Weary Dunlop Lookout, a resting point that offers a view of the River Kwai valley. While the trail itself is a memorial to all who suffered on the Burma-Thailand railway, this specific lookout is named after Sir Edward ‘’Weary’’ Dunlop, an Australian surgeon who was a prisoner of war and a key figure in re-establishing the trail after the war.
