Australia Post is to upgrade its extensive telecommunications network, undertaking the biggest transformation project ever attempted in the country.

The postal agency plans to roll out a series of upgrades to its expansive network, optimising performance for services right across the country.

According to Australia Post, when the 4,000-plus sites are upgraded, the end result will mean faster parcel processing, greater bandwidth for digital services and a significantly higher service level at every site.

Chief Information Officer at Australia Post, John Cox said the transformation was a key step in Australia Post’s growth strategy.

“This is the largest and most significant transformation of its type and demonstrates how Australia Post is leaning into the future to complete our ambitious agenda,” Mr Cox said.

“Telstra has been awarded the mobility tower, and will continue to look after all communication, collaboration and mobility needs, including audio/video conferencing.”

He said Australia Post would work with Telstra as it built its 5G network.

“Comscentre will transform and run Australia Post’s data network which spans over 4,000 sites, including all Post Offices, mail and parcel facilities, as well as corporate offices across the country,” Mr Cox said.

Chief Customer Officer (Business) at NBN Co, Paul Tyler said Australia Post had an extraordinary reach with one of the country’s largest retail networks and played a unique role supporting Australian communities.

“We are delighted that Australia Post has put its trust in the NBN network and business-grade NBN services to support such a significant national transformation,” Mr Tyler said.
