Canberrans took advantage of the good weather last weekend (11-12 September) by visiting closed ACT reserves, prompting a reminder from ACT Policing that everyone needs to ensure they are aware of the current lockdown rules.
Detective Superintendent with ACT Policing, Naomi Binstead said police were generally pleased with people’s efforts to stick to the health rules over the past five weeks, however, attendance at closed reserves on the weekend was concerning.
“On Saturday approximately, 40 vehicles were located in closed reserves along the Cotter Road and Paddy’s River Road,” Detective Superintendent Binstead said.
“In most cases – people had ignored clear signage indicating the closure,” she said.
“The people present were asked to move on by ACT Policing Rural Patrol officers and ACT Parks officers with 100 directions given to move on.”
Det Supt Binstead urged people to keep up the good work and not become complacent as rules changed.
She reminded people that many parks and reserves remained closed to the public including Namadgi National Park; Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve; Lower Cotter Catchment (pictured); Cotter precinct; Kambah Pool; Uriarra Crossing; Woods Reserve Campground; Northern Borders Campground; and Googong Foreshores.
“We will be continuing our compliance activities and will not hesitate to issue infringements or arrest people who are in breach of health directions,” she said.
“Everyone has had more than enough time to be aware of the rules and to be able to stick to them,” Det Supt Binstead said.
