Police tip their hats to responsible drivers

ACT Policing has congratulated the Canberra community for not drink driving during the AFL and NRL grand final weekend, last weekend.

Officer in Charge of Road Policing, Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman said Police conducted 1,292 breath tests over the weekend and found only one driver exceeding the legal alcohol limit.

“To record just one positive breath test from more than a thousand is an outstanding outcome and something we haven’t seen for quite some time,” Detective Inspector Boorman said.

“With two big sporting grand finals and Spring Carnival racing over one weekend, we knew people would be out celebrating and I’m delighted to see most people were enjoying themselves responsibly,” he said.

“This weekend was a great example of people thinking ahead and planning an alternate and safe way home.”

Detective Inspector Boorman said the grand finals weekend was typically one of the busiest weekends of the year for police targeting drink drivers.

“With the added danger from wet and slippery conditions over the weekend, it was most encouraging to see drivers taking the risks of driving under the influence of alcohol seriously,” he said.

“There are plenty of public transport options in the ACT and they’re all better than gambling with your safety or licence.”

Detective Inspector Boorman said Police conducted both targeted and random breath tests on drivers over weekend.
