Police on track with commuter safety

ACT Policing’s month-long focus on commuter safety has turned its attention to public transport commuters this week, aligning with Rail Safety Week (9-15 August).

Officer-in-Charge of ACT Road Policing and Detective Inspector at ACT Policing, Donna Hofmeier said police would conduct operations along the light rail corridor and would be paying attention to all forms of commuter behaviour.

“Drivers are reminded to obey the traffic lights on the light rail network and to remember light rail vehicles get priority at intersections, which means traffic light sequences can vary,” Detective Inspector Hofmeier said.

“Crossing a road, or the light rail tracks, against a red light is dangerous, irresponsible and an offence,” she said.

“Regardless of whether the signal relates to crossing a road or crossing the light rail track, everyone must obey the lights and stop on a red signal.”

Detective Inspector Hofmeier called for patience and reminded drivers that traffic lights operated to keep everyone safe.

To mark Rail Safety Week, the Transport Canberra and City Service Directorate released a series of tips to keep motorists, pedestrians and vulnerable road users safe around the light rail.

The Directorate said people should stay of the tracks; avoid distractions; follow instructions; and encourage other to be safe.

The Directorate’s tips on rail safety can be accessed at this PS News link.
