ACT Policing officers have responded to more than 700 compliance complaints since the Territory’s lockdown commenced on 12 August.

Deputy Commissioner for ACT Policing and Chief Police Officer for the ACT, Neil Gaughan said that when police attendance had been required in response to COVID-19 compliance reports, the incidents had largely been resolved quickly and amicably.

Chief Police Officer Gaughan said it was important for people to keep up to date with changing public health directions and reminded Canberrans to check what they would be allowed to do from 5pm today (2 September).

“We ask that people use common sense when looking at the changes,” Chief Police Officer Gaughan said.

“We have to again thank the people who have been in quarantine, largely in good spirits, because it’s keeping us safe,” he said.

“We will maintain our focus on compliance activities, including mask wearing, and our activities at border crossings as lockdown continues.”

Chief Police Officer Gaughan said people should check the Territory’s COVID-19 website for the latest information and then, if the information they needed was not there, call the COVID-19 helpline on 6207 7244, 8am to 8pm, seven days a week.

“If it’s something that needs immediate police attention, then call us,” he said.

“The ACT is still in lockdown and it is important that people are sensible and continue to do the right thing by staying home and staying within their local areas,” Chief Police Officer Gaughan said.
