ACT Policing has increased its COVID-19 compliance activity and joined forces with NSW Police to patrol the ACT and NSW border.
Superintendent for Road Policing in ACT Policing, Superintendent Corey Heldon said the two police forces would conduct a number of joint patrol activities at major entry points along the border.
“Right now there are COVID-19 health directions which allow and restrict the movement of people who live and work across the border,” Supt Heldon said.
“We are well connected with many NSW communities and we know everyone is trying to do the right thing,” he said.
“It’s great to be able to speak to drivers about the new health directions to ensure continued strong compliance.”
Supt Heldon said people should expect to see the joint operations anywhere, anytime.
“There are many roads leading into Canberra and police may be patrolling different roads at the border at different times in the coming days,” he said.
Detective Superintendent of the COVID-19 Taskforce in ACT Policing, Naomi Binstead said there was very clear advice about what restrictions were in place during the lockdown.
“While we have seen a good overall level of compliance across the ACT, there are still those few people that have decided they either know better, or that these important rules do not apply to them,” Det Supt Binstead said.
“As the Chief Police Officer has repeatedly said – stay at home unless you meet the reasons identified by ACT Health and check the ACT Health website for the most up-to-date information,” she said.
Det Supt Binstead asked Canberrans not to call police for general COVID-19 lockdown information.
“A significant number of calls have been received by our operations centre and the vast majority of these are already clearly answered on the ACT Health website,” she said.
