ACT Policing has linked up with NSW Police to share the task of ensuring people crossing the ACT and NSW border are complying with COVID-19 lockdown rules.
The ACT’s Detective Acting Superintendent for Road Policing, Donna Hofmeier said that in just one day last week (16 September), the joint policing operation stopped 4,301 vehicles and turned 12 away at checkpoints on the Federal Highway, Canberra Avenue, Lanyon Drive and Monaro Highway.
“Since the ACT COVID-19 lockdown started, ACT Policing has now made well in excess of 20,000 vehicle compliance checks, and we’ve stepped up the pace with this operation,” A/Det Supt Hofmeier said.
“There are health directions which restrict the movement of people across the border and, with the school holidays starting, everyone must remember that the lockdown rules still apply,” she said.
“Canberra residents can’t host visitors from NSW, and Canberrans can’t go for a holiday in NSW, so we’re working with our colleagues from NSW to cover traffic in both directions.”
A/Det Supt Hofmeier said the joint operations between ACT Policing and the NSW Police would continue during the school holidays.
Superintendent and District Commander of Monaro Police with the NSW Police Force, John Klepczarek said the Police would take action against anyone caught breaching travel rules, “which includes hefty fines or you will be turned around back to the ACT”.
