ACT Policing has teamed up with the Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate on a road safety campaign to target drink driving.
Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations at ACT Policing, Detective Acting Inspector, Paul Hutcheson said the campaign was part of ACT Policing’s road safety focus for December.
Detective Acting Inspector Hutcheson said the best option for drivers was to choose to drink or drive, but not both.
“The message is simple – if you’re drinking alcohol, don’t drive,” he said.
“If you have been drinking, and you aren’t sure if you should drive, then don’t; find another way home.
“Use public transport, a taxi, or a ride-sharing service.”
Detective Acting Inspector Hutcheson said police would be conducting random breath test operations throughout the month so people should expect to see police anywhere, anytime
“If you choose to drive after drinking, or taking drugs, you’re taking unnecessary risks with your life, your passengers’ lives and the lives of other road users,” he said.
Detective Acting Inspector Hutcheson said that, between 1 January and 28 November this year, ACT Policing laid 721 charges for drink driving and 457 charges for drug driving.
