The Minister for Community Services and Facilities has announced that 19 of the Territory’s children’s playgrounds are to be refreshed and improved in the months ahead.

The Minister, Chris Steel said the upgrade program followed the 16 play spaces currently being updated.

“Play space refreshes will help improve the condition of existing playgrounds and includes repainting of equipment, replacing soft-fall mulch, and repairing seating, decks and fences,” Mr Steel said.

He said the new improvements would take place in Fadden, Hughes, Melba, Chifley, Watson, Isaacs, McKellar, Griffith, Fadden, Belconnen, Wanniassa, Pearce, Monash, Florey (two playgrounds), Macquarie, Theodore (two playgrounds) and Watson.

“One of the upgrade priorities is new shade sails so that playgrounds can be enjoyed during the heat of the summer,” Mr Steel said.

He said four new shade sails would be installed at playgrounds in Hughes, Isaacs, Monash and Macquarie, expanding on the seven installed this financial year.

“The upgrades and refreshes will make Canberra playgrounds more attractive, comfortable and safe for children and their parents and carers.”

The 19 play spaces already receiving upgrades are at Kambah, Yerrabi Pond, Richardson, Narrabundah, Higgins, Torrens, Waramanga, Eddison Park, Glebe Park, and Farrer.

“We want to create spaces for children of all ages to socialise and develop their motor skills in a broad range of play environments,” Mr Steel said.
