A discussion paper outlining a plan to ban single-use plastics in NSW has been released for public comment by the Department of Primary Industries and Environment (DPIE).
NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for the Environment, Matt Kean have invited feedback on the NSW Plastics Plan discussion paper Cleaning Up Our Act: Redirecting the Future of Plastic in NSW which outlines a pathway to reduce single-use, unnecessary and problematic plastics in NSW and help build a circular economy.
“The community has high expectations and we need to make sure we put in place the best plans for the future,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“We know that we need to do a better job of dealing with our waste and delivering sustainable solutions,” she said.
Ms Berejiklian said the Department would ensure that any businesses potentially affected by phase outs had enough time to adjust and source sustainable alternatives.
Mr Kean said the NSW waste industry needed to be sustainable, reliable and affordable.
He said DPIE wanted to hear from as many parts of the community as possible, to ensure the strategies put in place were practical and worked for the people of NSW.
Mr Kean said the paper was open for feedback until 8 May.
