Transport Canberra and City Services has announced that construction is now under way on a landscape installation for the six-month Woden Experiment.
Minister for City Services, Chris Steel said the Woden Experiment was part of the Government’s efforts to provide better public places in town centres, and to support urban regeneration.
“The community provided their ideas and input on the concept designs during the consultation and this has informed the designs now being constructed,” Mr Steel said.
“The activation is designed to transform the challenging (and windy) Woden Town Square into a friendly environment with more social and cultural opportunities.”
He said construction was aimed at delivering a new-look town square with inviting spaces in which people wanted to pause and make use of.
“Over the coming weeks the public can expect to see a variety of installations popping up, including natural sculpture elements for play, smart benches and spaces for small picnics and gatherings,” Mr Steel said.
“The Woden community told us that the town square was missing the kind of friendly community space that exists in other areas of Canberra. They wanted a space that created opportunities for small gatherings and events.”
He said the Woden Experiment was a response to feedback and he hoped the community enjoyed and made good use of their invigorated town square.
Funding for the Woden Experiment totals $1 million and its official launch is expected in March.
