The Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate has launched a new avenue for members of the public to comment on, and contribute to, planning policies for the Territory.
Minister for Planning and Land Management, Mick Gentleman said the new Planning Strategy Refresh was an opportunity for the community and industry to learn more about the city’s planning framework and to have their say on it.
“We want to open a conversation with the community about how planning will work for our city over the coming years,” Mr Gentleman said.
“The ACT Planning Strategy helps promote well-planned and financially sound development that is consistent with the expectations and aspirations of the community.”
He said the refreshed Strategy document would carry forward the major policies established in 2012, but would also incorporate the progress being made towards key Government priorities such as achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions in the ACT by 2045.
“A lot of the 2012 Strategy remains relevant, but we need an updated Strategy that takes into account the changes our city is undergoing, notably light rail, our commitment to climate sustainability and ongoing urban renewal,” Mr Gentleman said.
He said in recent years there had been engagements and consultations with the community, including about housing choices, the new Housing Strategy, the city’s Statement of Planning Intent and major projects such as City and Gateway.
“The community has provided valuable input … continuing the conversation with the Planning Strategy Refresh will bring this input together,” Mr Gentleman said.
“We want to embark on an engagement that checks in with the community and sees that we are getting things right.”
The Minister said the Planning Strategy Refresh would begin with a series of seminars, highlighted with digital live streaming to extend participation to online viewers.
