The $2 billion Bankstown Hospital project has reached a new milestone, thanks to the approval of the State Significant Development application and the appointment of a builder to support design and planning finalisation.
This investment represents the single largest capital outlay in a public hospital in the state’s history.
Multiplex has been appointed as the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) building partner. Under this arrangement, Multiplex will coordinate and work with project designers, hospital clinicians and staff to finalise design ahead of construction.
Activities such as demolition and site remediation are already well underway and will continue throughout the year in preparation for construction on the main hospital, expected in 2027.
The hospital site is in Bankstown’s CBD, providing patients, staff and visitors with a convenient place to access a broad range of services, connected by public transport.
“This approval is a major boost for Bankstown, giving local communities better access to modern health facilities closer to home,” Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said.
“Well located near public transport, including the future Bankstown Metro station, the new hospital will support the renewal of the city centre while making it easier for patients, staff and visitors to access services.”
More beds and treatment spaces are a vital part of the facility, with enhanced services set in a 14-floor building, as well as a multistorey carpark, an emergency drop-off point and a dedicated emergency parking area.
Health Minister Ryan Park said: ”The state-of-the-art new Bankstown Hospital will deliver more beds and treatment spaces and deliver critical care for the population of southwest Sydney that will help meet the healthcare needs of the fast-growing and diverse community.”
The hospital is expected to include:
- An intensive care unit
- Operating theatres
- An expanded emergency department
- Ambulatory care services
- Medical and surgical services
- Mental health inpatient services
- Oncology services
- Aged-care services
- Women’s and children’s health services, including maternity.
The Minns Government is investing $11.9 billion to provide or upgrade 32 hospitals and health services statewide.
Some $910 million is earmarked for the new Rouse Hill Hospital, with $630 million to redevelop Fairfield Hospital, $400 million for the Canterbury Hospital redevelopment and $120 million for new beds at the Blacktown and Mount Druitt hospitals.
