The Chief Minister, Andrew Barr, has released a new $14 billion infrastructure plan in readiness for the ACT’s population to grow to 500,000.
Mr Barr said that investment in infrastructure would ensure Canberra remained one of the world’s most liveable cities.
“The Government has created a comprehensive, multi-decade infrastructure plan to build on the foundations that already make the capital a great place to live, work, start a business and raise a family,” Mr Barr said.
He said the plan detailed infrastructure right the Territory.
“It includes new schools in our suburbs, the largest expansion of the Canberra Hospital in the ACT Government’s history and the renewal of existing infrastructure in more established regions,” he said.
Mr Barr said the focus of the plan was on the priorities that mattered most: health, education, transport and community services.
He said the plan showed how major infrastructure investments would support economic growth and provide the services Canberrans need.
“The Government wants to ensure that the ACT can attract the world’s best performers and artists with a bigger, fit-for-purpose theatre as part of a broader arts and cultural precinct in the heart of the city,” he said.
“(But) the Canberra Theatre for example was built for a city of 100,000 people.”
Mr Barr said the plan acknowledged Canberra’s role as a regional hub with more than 750,000 people living within its borders and in the greater Canberra region.
