Pedestrian crossings to boost virus tests

Transport for NSW is working closely with NSW Health to deliver automated pedestrian crossings where they’ll be most effective limiting the spread of COVID-19.

Chief Operations Officer at Transport for NSW, Howard Collins said that for the first time pedestrian crossings had been automated at selected temporary COVID-19 assessment clinics.

Mr Collins said the automated crossings were part of a program to automate pedestrian signals at key health precincts across the State.

“This means pedestrians no longer need to push the ‘call’ button to activate the pedestrian signal crossings while still being able to cross the road safely and access health services,” he said.

“Transport for NSW has taken a targeted approach by implementing this public health measure where it would be most effective in limiting the spread of Coronavirus,” he said.

Mr Collins said the Departments were working to identify key health precincts where the initiative would be most effective at protecting the most vulnerable people, including essential frontline staff, patients and members of the community.

He said automated pedestrian crossings had previously operated in the Sydney’s CBD during peak times.

“During the coronavirus outbreak, this was extended to operate 24/7 in the CBD, as well as major health precincts, where hospitals with emergency departments operate 24 hours,” he said.

Mr Collins said any further expansion of the initiative would consider impacts on road safety, traffic and transport operations and community amenity.
