Infrastructure Australia (IA) has announced a network of cycling superhighways across Melbourne as one of its Priority Initiatives for 2020.

The news has been welcomed by the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV), which submitted the cycling network plan to IA for consideration in its 2020 Infrastructure Priority List.

Senior Planner of Mobility Futures at RACV, Stuart Outhred said RACV had developed a shortlist of 17 strategic cycling corridors across metropolitan Melbourne as part of its submission.

“Designed to connect Melburnians to major activity centres like the CBD and surrounds, the 17 RACV identified cycling superhighways include Chapel Street and St Kilda Road, the two highest priority corridors, as well as Napier Street – St Georges Road in the north,” Mr Outhred said.

“The RACV submission was one of only two new projects in Victoria endorsed as a Priority Initiative in IA’s Infrastructure Priority List,” he said.

Mr Outhred said RACV had been advocating safer bicycle infrastructure for several years, saying commuters needed more transport options in the city.

“These priority corridors deserve more than just paint – we want to see high-quality, separate infrastructure that makes everyone feel safe and comfortable when riding,” he said.

Chief Executive at IA, Romilly Madew said the second new proposal endorsed as a Priority Initiative by IA was the Frankston public transport connectivity project.

Ms Madew said the Infrastructure Priority List reflected both the diversity and urgency of Australia’s future infrastructure needs.
