Part-time car rego proving popular

More than a third of motorists took up short-term vehicle registrations in 2020, allowing them to pay less upfront and spread the cost of renewing their registration throughout the year.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Ben Carroll said more than 1.8 million Victorians were now paying their registration every three or six months.

“The newer registration options are helping Victorians manage household bills and keep their cars on the road during the economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic,” Mr Carroll said.

“The scheme continues to be popular across Melbourne and regional Victoria, with the highest number of short-term registered vehicles in Craigieburn, Pakenham and Point Cook,” he said.

“In regional Victoria, short term registration is most popular in Mildura, Shepparton and Warrnambool.”

Mr Carroll said the scheme was particularly popular with young Victorians, with 59 per cent of vehicles owned by drivers under 20 taking advantage of the flexible registration options.

The Minister said a three-month registration in metropolitan Melbourne costed $211.20; a six-month registration costed $419.90; and an annual registration fee $834.80.

“Revenue from registration fees is used to help fund TAC insurance to assist people as they recover from crashes, as well as to fund vital road upgrades,” Mr Carroll said.
