Parliament House turns 30 years old this year and is celebrating with a free birthday party this Saturday (5 May).
Everyone is invited to the party which will be held in the Great Hall.
A panel of special guests will reflect on the architectural, social, historical, political and cultural legacy of the Parliament House from the past 30 years.
Led by presenter of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Insiders program, Barrie Cassidy, the panel will feature former Cabinet Ministers Gareth Evans and Kay Patterson; veteran political journalist, Michelle Grattan; arts advocate, Robyn Archer; and David Chandler, who led the building’s construction.
Later in the day, The Canberra Symphony Orchestra will perform music by some of Australia’s most celebrated composers including Percy Grainger, Graham Koehne, Elena Kats-Chernin, and Paul Paviour, who composed the musical score for the official opening of Parliament House.
Visitors will also be able to hear the world premiere of a new work by award-winning Canberra composer and pianist, Sally Greenaway.
Thirty years after it was built, Parliament House remains one of the largest buildings in the Southern Hemisphere with, when Parliament is in session, more than 5,000 people working inside it. It also receives more than one million visitors each year.
