All ACT Parks and Conservation areas, except Namadgi National Park, parts of Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve and Bimberi Wilderness Area, have reopened after being closed to the public during the bushfire season.
Announcing the openings, the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate said that at Tidbinbilla, the area between the Visitors Centre and Flints picnic area was now open, including the playground and the Gibraltar Peak walking track.
“Western parts of the reserve, including the Eucalypt Forest and the Sanctuary will remain closed while our team work to fix infrastructure damaged by the fires and flood,” the Directorate said.
It said Namadgi National Park and Bimberi Wilderness Area remained closed to the public for safety reasons.
“Fire and storm activity has caused significant damage to these areas,” the Directorate said.
“ACT Parks and Conservation Service are working to remove dangerous trees and fix key infrastructure over the coming months to enable these areas to be reopened,” it said.
“We will endeavour to keep the community updated on our efforts to open the remaining closed parks and reserves.”
It said while the northern and southern recreation areas and walking trails at Googong Foreshore were now open, the public boat ramp at Drumstick Point would be closed until further notice due to low water levels
“Currently Googong dam is at 43 per cent capacity and is being utilised for supply of water to Canberra and the region,” the Directorate said.
“Despite the low water levels, fishing remains good, with plenty of opportunity for shoreline fishing.”
It said a ban on naked flames remained in place across all ACT Parks and Conservation Service’s managed estate until the end of March, with the exception of Cotter Campground.
