Pandemic building blitz aims to be COVIDsafe

WorkSafe Victoria and the Victorian Building Authority have partnered with the State’s Industry Enforcement and Engagement Operation to launch a COVIDSafe compliance blitz targeting the construction sector.

Treasurer, Tim Pallas said construction sites had been identified as a major source of transmission in the State’s latest COVID-19 outbreak.

“To ensure we can slow the spread of coronavirus and protect the Victorian health system, a four-week blitz will be carried out,” Mr Pallas said.

“Many people working in construction are young, highly mobile and unvaccinated,” he said.

“Given the increased public health risks, the joint operation will have a ‘zero tolerance’ approach and will apply fines and prohibition notices to fix any serious non-compliance.”

Mr Pallas said the blitz would be supported by additional engagement with the construction industry and workers in the sector would receive priority vaccination without a booking until 26 September at four major vaccination centres.

The Treasurer said the Ford Campbellfield site, the Heidelberg Repat, Eagle Stadium in Wyndham, and the former Bunnings in Melton were open for walk-ups for construction workers from 8am until 11am.

“Some 20,000 further priority Pfizer appointments will made available to construction workers at all sites across Victoria (excluding drive-through sites),” he said.

Mr Pallas said anyone who worked at a site where civil works, building or construction activities took place was eligible for the priority vaccinations.
