The Tasmanian and Federal governments are working together to deliver safe, secure and high-quality housing across the state.

Fifteen new two-bedroom social homes have been completed in Berriedale, replacing two ageing blocks of flats and transforming the site into a modern, medium-density community.

The new units are already providing housing for Tasmanians on the housing register, with the first tenants already settled into their new homes.

The homes were built to the silver level of the Livable Housing Design Guidelines, while the bathrooms meet the gold standard.

Preston Lane Architects developed the design, and the project was delivered by Fairbrother Construction.

Joint backing meant the development was supported by a $7.2 million funding injection from the Federal Government through the Social Housing Accelerator Payment program (SHAP), while the Tasmanian Government contributed $2.3 million and the land itself.

“The Federal Labor Government has invested $7.2 million in this project because we know the answer to housing pressure is to build more homes, make better use of land we already have and deliver good-quality housing where people need it,” Senator for Tasmania Carol Brown said.

The State Government has outlined medium-density developments as critical to its efforts to ease housing pressures in high-demand areas without expanding urban centres outwards.

Tasmanian Minister for Housing and Planning Kerry Vincent said: “This project is a great example of how the Tasmanian Liberal Government is delivering more quality homes, faster, by making better use of land we already own that is close to services and other amenities.

“We are building an even better Tasmania by delivering modern, medium-density homes for our community.”

This project is one of seven Tasmanian developments receiving combined SHAP funding totalling $50 million, supporting the delivery of 128 social and affordable homes.

Investment from SHAP has completed 25 homes, with a further 65 expected in the coming months. The Tasmanian Government has a target of 10,000 social and affordable homes by 2032.
