The five projects funded in the latest round of City Grants to help make the city centre more exciting, interesting and attractive, have been decided.

Announced by the Chief Executive of the City Renewal Authority, Malcolm Snow the projects include an art and design event featuring six retired Transport Canberra buses, calling itself the Orange Wolves project.

The project was awarded a $50,000 to host a three-day event that will utilise the converted buses as small cinemas, music venues, fashion runways and maker and installation spaces.

The project is expected to provide an immersive experience including music, media, arts, fashion, technology and design.

‘Tier Two’ grants, for projects to be delivered during the 2019-20 financial year, were also awarded with the Design Canberra Festival receiving $50,000; the You Are Here Festival, $50,000; the World Curry Festival, $50,000; and the Canberra Comedy Festival, $43,200.

Six ‘Tier One’ grants of up to $10,000 were also awarded to projects to be delivered in the second half of 2019.

These went to the SpringOUT Big Community Picnic 2019; a community listening project called #CBRtalks; a series of dance performances and a flash mob; an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander storytelling event; a Braddon busking festival; and a narrative map of the city centre that will be translated into a large mural.

Mr Snow said the diverse variety of grant recipients would support increased activity in the city centre and encourage higher visitation.

“We had a lot of great applications in this round of funding but our successful applicants really demonstrated how their project would make the city a more fun, welcoming and exciting place to spend time,” Mr Snow said.

“Design Canberra and the Canberra Comedy Festival will both put Civic Square at the centre of their events and the Orange Wolves project will bring something totally different to our city’s public spaces.”

He said that in addition, the World Curry Festival would bring a much loved event back to City Walk and the popular ‘You Are Here Festival’ would return to invite the community to interact with the city in engaging ways.
