Nurses across the ACT were recognised for their contribution to the Canberra community on International Nurses Day last week (12 May).

Minister for Health, Rachel Stephen-Smith said there were almost 7,000 nurses in the ACT, working across a variety of diverse health settings.

“The ACT Government is proud of the skilled and dedicated nurses and midwives who work across the ACT, who are always there to support individuals, families and our community,” Ms Stephen-Smith said.

“Nurses provide care in our hospitals, aged care facilities and community health centres,” she said.

“They support Canberrans across primary, acute, public and private healthcare and are involved in policy making, leadership, education, research and innovation.”

Ms Stephen-Smith said nurses had played a key role throughout the Territory’s COVID-19 response and were now leading the Health Directorate’s COVID-19 vaccination clinics.

“The expertise, flexibility and proactive attitude of nurses responding to the COVID-19 pandemic has been exceptional,” the Minister said.

She said the theme for 2021 International Nurses Day, Nurses: a voice to lead – a vision for future healthcare, highlighted the ongoing development of nursing and how the profession would transform the future of healthcare around the world.
